Boyce, P.Eng, President of ASHRAE 2019-2020, said: “In light of the current global pandemic, it is critical that ASHRAE provide a response, guided by ventilation and filtration recommendations, in mitigating the transmission of the virus. ASHRAE has an important role to play in ensuring safe and healthy building environments, and its comments will provide the expert strategies needed right now.”

ASHRAE has provided the following comments to prevent the spread of erroneous statements about HVAC systems. ASHRAE officially opposes the recommendation not to run residential or commercial HVAC systems, claiming that keeping air conditioners on during this time can help control the spread of the virus. The statement made by ASHRAE is as follows:

ASHRAEʼnn statement on airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
It is likely that SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted by air, airborne exposure to the virus needs to be controlled. Changes and adjustments to the building operating process, including the operation of HVAC systems, can reduce problems with airborne virus transmission.

ASHRAEʼnn’s statement on the operation of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems to reduce transmission of SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
Ventilation and filtration provided by HVAC systems can reduce the airborne concentration of SARS-CoV-2 and therefore the risk of airborne transmission. Unventilated areas can be directly life-threatening and cause thermal stress in people with low resistance to infection. In general, disabling HVAC systems is not a recommended measure to reduce transmission of the virus. HVAC filters, along with other strategies, help reduce virus contamination while removing other air pollutants that can have health effects.

ASHRAE’s Environmental Health Committee has also produced an Emerging Issues Summary to support the two statements above:

There is great concern about the possibility of airborne transmission of various pathogens, particularly SARS-CoV-2, in healthcare facilities, office and retail industry workers, customers, manufacturing workers, private and public institutions, outdoor settings and public transport.

ASHRAE has created the Outbreak Task Force of leading experts to address the relationship between disease spread and HVAC in buildings during the current pandemic and future outbreaks. The Position Paper Committee of the ASHRAE Environmental Health Committee has also updated its Position Paper on Infectious Aerosols.

For additional details, please visit the continuously updated ASHRAE COVID-19 Resources webpage at www.ashrae.org/COVID19.
