This figure was recorded as the highest level ever observed.<\/strong><\/p><p>According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (T\u00dc\u0130K), compiled by the Anadolu Agency (AA) correspondent, the total number of paid employees in industry, construction, trade and services increased by 1.2% in August compared with the same period of the previous year and reached 16,089,450 people.<\/p><p>When assessed by sectors and subgroups, the highest increase was recorded in construction. The number of paid employees in the construction sector increased by 7.2% in August compared with the same period of the previous year and reached 2,011,335 people. Compared with August of the previous year, the number of employees increased by 134,733 people.<\/p><p class=\"selectionShareable\">It was noted that the number of paid employees in the sector reached the highest level in 200 months since January 2009, when these data began to be published. The previous peak was recorded in July and amounted to 2,000,671 people.<\/p><p>According to the data published for August, 1,316,892 people were employed in the construction of buildings, 258,390 people in the construction of civil engineering structures, and 436,053 people in specialized construction works. Growth rates in these subgroups were 8.4%, 5.1% and 5%, respectively.<\/p><p><strong>\u201cThe sector retains its position as one of the areas of the economy that creates the most employment\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>Professor Ali Hep\u015fen of the Faculty of Business Administration at \u0130stanbul University, in his comments to the AA correspondent, stated that employment growth in the construction sector should be considered on several levels. According to him, the first factor was the recent acceleration of infrastructure projects and urban transformation projects financed by the public sector.<\/p><p>Hep\u015fen emphasized that many projects launched especially before the local elections entered the completion phase, which increased employment on construction sites, and continued:<\/p><p>\u201cThe second factor is that the private sector, despite low sales rates, continues construction to a certain extent. Companies follow the strategy of \u2018complete the project and hold the asset, even if it cannot be sold immediately.\u2019 This is because financing costs are high, but cost increases also continue; in other words, waiting also has a cost. Another aspect is temporary adjustments related to bringing informal employment into the official record. Especially within the subcontractor chain, this may increase statistical indicators in the short term.\u201d<\/p><p>Hep\u015fen noted that maintaining employment in the construction sector at this level will not be easy: \u201cIf housing sales and new building permit data do not support this momentum, in the first quarter of the new year we may see stabilization of employment or even a slight correction. However, the general picture shows that, despite the high cost of works and materials, the sector still remains one of the areas of the economy that creates the most employment,\u201d he said.<\/p><p><strong>\u201cThese data show that construction is strengthening its role as the locomotive of economic growth\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>Mustafa Ekiz, Chairman of the Real Estate and Construction Platform, noted that this record was influenced by housing construction in the earthquake zone, social housing projects, the continuation of housing investments by the private sector, urban transformation projects and the acceleration of public infrastructure tenders.<\/p><p>Ekiz said: \u201cThese data show that construction is strengthening its role as the locomotive of economic growth. Despite active demand for housing, the reduction of inventory in recent months is encouraging the private sector to launch new projects.
